When considering the lighting in your home
there are many important aspects which you will need to consider.
You will need to think about what you want your lighting to
achieve, about the design of your home and what style of lighting
you will need to complement its existing features.
The most important consideration when
improving the lighting in your home, is that you are dealing with
electricity. Therefore safety must always be your first concern. In
fact, depending on where you live, there are legal restrictions
which must be abided by. You may find that the best solution is to
call in a licensed electrician.
This does not stop you however from
planning the best solutions for your home and you will find that
there are simple things that you can do yourself.
Before you think about what kind of
fixtures you want, think about what you want the light to do. Do
you want ambient lighting to light the whole room? Do you want
lighting for a particular task, such as reading? Or do you want
accent lighting to highlight a particular space or feature? These
considerations will impact on what kind of fixtures you use.
Another consideration is what type of
light bulbs you want to use. Incandescent bulbs are good for living
areas and bring out warm yellow tones. Fluorescent bulbs tend to
have a bluish tint, but they are the most energy efficient type of
light bulb. Halogen bulbs are the most expensive type of bulb, but
they are the most powerful providing a brighter and whiter light.
Although they are twice as expensive, they also generally last
twice as long as regular light bulbs.
If you have the right conditions in your
home and are thinking about how to light a dark area with natural
light, you may want to consider the possibility of installing a sun
light. This is not a small job, but the capable DIYer should be
able to do it with some careful planning.
Some carefully placed lamps can add warmth
to any room. Lamp shade kits can be purchased quite cheaply and
there are many ways to be creative about how you use them. A tall
lamp in the corner of a living room can be extremely effective with
the right lamp shade. Smaller lamp shades can also provide an
ambiance to a room as well as serving a practical purpose such as
providing a reading or study light.
When planning your lighting solutions take
a whole house approach. Try to be consistent in design throughout
your home, especially in the main living areas. You may wish to
have some feature areas, while also ensuring that you have plenty
of light in the areas that you need it most.
Lighting is a fantastic answer to how to brighten my kitchen and is crucial in designing a workable kitchen.
