Experiment. This is different for everybody.
In summary, a compressor is used to do (above the loudest parts) of an audio signal and then uses it to win make-up, to push the volume back. It takes a lot of time to cope with a Pancake Compressor. Note that you do much more with a compressor, but so many things. As always, you are not afraid to experiment
