How To Introduce Your New Dog To Your Family

So that bringing your new pet home runs comfortably and smoothly, and is free of stress for all concerned, you must prepare for the big event. Understanding how to train a dog involves more than just teaching him commands. It is important to establish care rules and routine for all the family in advance of the big day when you will collect your dog. Setting a date well in advance will also give you time to get all the necessary items ready.

Getting him adjusted

For puppies, take a week or so off, as a young puppy will need feeding and letting out to relieve himself more often than an adult. Over this period, gradually start introducing some easy dog training tips and start to train the puppy to wait a little longer between toilet times (adjusting feeding times gently, since puppies usually want to go after eating).

Slowly leave him longer and longer without your attention, or presence, restricted to an area of the house where he can do little damage and which is safe for him, to accustom him to being left on his own.

Arrange for someone to come in and see to the puppy at least once during the day while you are out until he is older and can cope better mentally and physically with your prolonged absences.

If your new dog is an adult, collect him in the middle of a weekend so you have just one day before everyone goes out to work or school and the everyday routine begins. If you spend a week at home, he will get used to having you around all the time and find it difficult to cope when normal routines resume.
